Premiered on August 1, 2023 -- Arte Germany & Arte France, WDR and Curiosity Stream: Three-part public television series from Spiegel TV. Our point of view includes Hollywood, technology, architecture, lifestyle and activism, structured by three episodes loosely dedicated to the 1950’s / 1960’s, 1970’s / 1980’s, the 1990’s and beyond.
In the 1950s, California was to make the impossible possible: A trip to the moon. Hollywood, Free Speech and the Hippie movement inspired the entire world.
In 1969 an oil spoil keeps the state on its toes. The ongoing race riots show that not everyone shares in the Californian dream. But the birth of Silicon Valley and the digital revolution bring the pioneer state back on track in the 1970s.
In the 90s, earthquakes and forest fires again set back the visionary state. Fighting these threats with the help of a former action hero, California prepares humanities next mission: Using home-grown technology to tackle climate change.

La Californie ! -- Le laboratoire de la planète Depuis la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, la Californie s'est imposée comme une terre promise de l'innovation, des idées pionnières et des révolutions sociétales. Retour sur une foisonnante histoire.
Surnommée "The Golden State", la Californie incarne, mieux que n'importe quel autre État, le rêve américain. Dès les années 1950, artistes, ingénieurs et scientifiques y affluent, faisant souffler sur les plages de Malibu un vent de créativité nouvelle. Multipliant les innovations, certains de ces pionniers réfléchissent à la concrétisation d'un projet des plus fous : aller sur la Lune. Dix ans plus tard, l'université de Berkeley devient le berceau des contestations étudiantes, qui ne tardent guère à servir de modèles à la jeunesse du monde entier. À San Francisco, où gravitent artistes et musiciens, plusieurs communautés prônent l'autosuffisance et l'amour libre, incarnant le rêve d'une société juste et pacifique.
La Californie ! -- Révoltes et révolutions technologiques En 1969, une gigantesque marée noire submerge les côtes de Santa Barbara. Marquant profondément l'opinion américaine, la catastrophe aboutit à la naissance des premières lois de protection de l'environnement et du littoral. La même année, l'ancêtre d'Internet voit le jour à l'université de Stanford, sous l'impulsion de la pionnière Elizabeth Feinler.
La Silicon Valley, alors peuplée de vergers et de fermes, devient peu à peu le paradis de l'innovation que l'on connaît aujourd'hui. Deux ans après le drame qui a mis brutalement fin à la mission Apollo 1, les Américains entreprennent à nouveau de viser la Lune. Côté sport, les premiers skate-parks voient le jour alors que le surf s'impose comme un véritable mode de vie.
La Californie ! -- De l'utopie à la réalité Dans nombre de domaines, la Californie a toujours une longueur d'avance. Alors que l'effondrement de l'Union soviétique marque la fin de la course à la Lune, le centre de recherche JPL, implanté au coeur de la Silicon Valley, se tourne rapidement vers la conquête de Mars. Près d'un demi-siècle plus tard, Elon Musk nourrit toujours l'espoir d'y envoyer des humains.
En architecture, le modernisme californien a développé, dès les années 1950, le concept d'habitat ouvert, qui a rapidement séduit le reste du monde. Les superproductions hollywoodiennes, quant à elle, ont très tôt mis en scène la menace des catastrophes naturelles... Face aux enjeux climatiques actuels, le culte de la voiture individuelle, encore omniprésent aux États-Unis, laisse ici place à la mobilité douce.
